19 ~ the legend of Morgan Graves

Present Day

“Well, what have we here? A bit of finger-lickin’ fun?” Finnian heard from the back of the pub as he stepped through the door. The first thing he saw was a strange beehive of butter yellow hair sitting atop a tiny woman who stood behind the bar. She’d been wiping down the counter with a towel, but she stopped mid-swipe and eyed him up and down as if she’d be interested in roasting him up for supper.

He couldn’t think of any response other than a nod in the girl’s general direction. When he took in the rest of his surroundings, he noticed everyone else was staring at him too. A couple of families, two teenage boys, and a handful of old, weathered fishermen. Finnian had a notion to turn right around and head back out the door, but that’s when Keeper Vaughn stepped in, nodded to everyone, and introduced him loudly. “Finnian Cole. New assistant at Sorrow.”

At that, everyone’s eyes lit up and they all started whispering to each other.

Great, now everyone knew his name. His fake name, anyway. He should have changed his first name, too, but it was too late for that now.

He made a beeline for the bar and decided to order a beer whether the keeper approved or not. He was going to need something to calm his nerves.

With a low glance at the tap lineup, he said in a low voice, “Drop Top.”

Gussy nodded her approval and got it started. “What’ll it be for you, Keeper?”

“Same.”

Gussy silently handed Finnian his first ever “beer ordered in a bar.” He tried not to look ecstatic while she stared pointedly at him as he took his first glorious sip. Then she handed the keeper his.

“Well, Mr. Cole, you come in my bar, you better spill your guts. Where you hail from, huh? Where’d you get that bum eye? You get in a fist fight at Jake’s Bar over in Kennedy or what?”

Finnian lowered his eyes and glanced at the keeper for support, but he was staring into his beer.

“All over, really.”

“You don’t say. That narrows it down quite a bit.” Gussy glanced at the keeper with a smirk. She turned back to Finnian. “And your eye?”

He had thought he’d get away with no one asking him this particular question. He hadn’t come up with a lie for that one. Didn’t people respect privacy anymore? Well, he couldn’t stall indefinitely.

“Old childhood scar. Not much to tell.”

She wasn’t buying it, but she was smart enough to know when not to push.

“Well, Finn—can
